QUEENSLAND’S PROFITS. For 1938-39 the Queensland Government’s Golden Casket Art Union, which has already provided Brisbane with the largest hospital block in the Commonwealth, returned a profit of £445,294. This is an increase of £47.363 on the previous year. The Government benefited by a further £95,125 in taxation on tickets. In his report to Parliament, the manager (Mr F. Burke) said that the results were most satisfactory, considering the competition of lotteries in other Australian States. Since July 1, 1920, when this venture was begun. Golden Casket profits and interest have amounted to £4.908.225. of which £3.759.107 has gone to hospitals. Substantial. contributions were made to other charities and institutions, leaving a balance at June 30. 1939. of £29.159. A casket agency is a profitable business in Queensland. Last, year the agents received £lOO 000 in commission.
