ERROR IN RIGGING
CAUSE OF COLLAPSE OF HANGAR ROOF SUB-CONTRACTORS ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY. STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. (By Telegraph—-Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The steel framework of the hangar at the Air Force station at Harewood, which collapsed on Tuesday, will be completely dismantled and rebuilt. The Minister of Public Works (Mr Semple), after inspecting the damaged building today, said the collapse was caused by an error made during the rigging of the steel spans which form the roof, and full responsibility had been accepted by the sub-contractors. The end bracings had not been delivered, but the company, in an endeavour to expedite the work, had gone ahead with the erection of intermediate spans in the roof. Two guy ropes had parted and the strain thrown on one span had caused its collapse and this span had brought the remainder down with it. The greater portion of the steel will be shipped to Wellington and straightened. It is considered that the steel will not lose any of its stability in this process and that it can be used again. The damage is estimated at £lOO2.
