CARTERTON COUNCIL I MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. I CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL EFFORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held at Carterton last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) and Councillors W. A. Hart, J. Udy. E. McKenzie, C. J. DeLacey, R. A. Copeland. H. Mortensen, C. E. Stevens and Miss O. Wolters. An apology for absence was received from Councillor L. M. Clark. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £45 5s Id at the Bank of New Zealand in the District Fund Account, and a credit balance in the Gasworks Account of £670 5s 3d. Accounts amounting to £6Bl 16s in District Fund Account and £607 3s Id in the Gasworks Account were passed for payment. Mr J. C. D. Mackley, secretary of the Wairarapa- Distric* Zone Committee of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, wrote in regard to the local centennial celebration. The reply to be sent forward was to the effect that Thursday, March 7, had been chosen as the date to hold the combined Carterton borough and Wairarapa South Country district celebration, in the form of a procession and sports gathering on the Carterton Showgrounds. The Wairarapa P. and A. Society was granted the usual rebate of £5 on water rates charged to the society in connection with its show. Mr W. Howard Booth wrote resigning the position as assessor to the borough of Carterton under the Urban Farm Land Rating Act, 1932, owing to pressure of his private affairs. The resignation was accepted with regret and Mr Booth was thanked for his services. Mr J. Steel was appointed to succeed Mr Booth. The works committee's report, which contained recommendations for various works in the borough including extensive tarring and sanding of newly-formed footpaths and roads, was approved. It was decided that High Street be closed for traffic on Christmas and New Year’s Eve between/the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The gas committee's report was read and adopted. It was decided that the gasworks meter be put under test and that’"arrangements be made with Messrs Rabbidge Ltd. to carry out an early inspection. It was also decided to instal another gas cooker in the gas manager's residence. During the month a De Luxe gas cooker, a caliphont and two second-hand gas cookers were installed and sundry choked service pipes cleaned and faulty meters changed. The overseer's report of work carried out during the month was read and adopted. The application of the Carterton Picture Co. to screen a picture programme on Christmas evening was approved, with a proviso that the pictures be commenced at 8.15 o’clock. It was resolved to call a meeting of various organisations, such as Fire Brigade. Red Cross. Women’s Divisions, for the purpose of forming an emergency committee in case such were required. the meeting to be held in the ■Dalefield Dairy Co’s, building on Monday, December 11. at 8 o’clock. The clerk’s action in paying the foreman £3OO a year was endorsed by the council. It was decided that the Carterton and district's centennial memorial be the alteration and improving of the swimming baths at a cost of approximately £l6OO. It was resolved that a general public meeting be called to consider ways and means of financing the same. The meeting is to be held on Thursday, December 7. at 8 o'clock. The question of a Flag Dajl to raise, funds for the entertainment of soldiers in camp at Christmas time came before the council. It was decided to ask the co-operation of women's organisations for the purpose of raising funds. It was resolved that the position of a swimming baths attendant be advertised and that applications be considered by the Baths Committee. Restrictions in regard to the use of water hoses are to take effect iminediatelv. The next meeting of the council will 1 be held on December 19.
