PERSONAL ITEMS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. Swanson, who injured a leg recently, is about again. Mrs Mclntosh. Senr. who is staying with her daughter at Rongokokako and who has been suffering with a leg ailment has improved greatly. She is expected home within the next few days. Mrs Baird and family (Masterton) were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. D. McMaster. Korari, for a few days. Mr and Mrs Arbuthnott, Christchurch, were visitors to the Lake Ferry last week. Messrs Mason and Poynter, of the Dominion Museum, have been visitors to this district. They took photographs of the Lake Ferry and other interesting localities and also visited the various nesting grounds of sea birds. Mr Nind, chief postmaster. Wellington, paid an official visit to the local office recently. Miss Purnell, late of the Te Pula school, Gisborne, will commence her duties at the local school on Monday. Mr and Mrs Patrick were among the weekend visitors to the Lake Ferry. Mi' and Mrs Saunders are the guests of Mr and Mrs T. Matthews, South Featherston. | The many friends of Mr R. McDougl all. who is a patient in a private hosj pital in Wellington, will, be pleased to learn that his health shows an improvement. Kohunui Maori Cemetery. A meeting of Maoris was held at Kohunui recently for the purpose of taking steps for the renovation pl’ the Maori cemetery at Kohunui. A committee was formed with Mr Enoka as chairman, Mrs Carter as treasurer, and Mr J. Carter as secretary. Already several donations have been received and it is intended to commence the work almost immediately. Lake Opened. The outlet of the lake, which has been closed for the past fortnight, was successfully opened on Monday. Shearing Interrupted. Recent rains have again interrupted shearing- and it seems likely that the weather will continue unfavourable for the next week. Fish Plentiful. When the lake was opened on Monday fishermen had a busy time. Fish of all species were caught, groper and kahawai being the main catches. J School Gala Day. The Kahutara School is holding a gala day at the weekend when various events will be held. The judging of calves reared by the school children will take place. The school has in the past years held similar functions with much success and it is expected that this year’s gala day will be aS successful. Justice of the Peace. Owing to the continued illness of Mr R. McDougall, who is the only Justice of the Peace in the district, much inconvenience has arisen especially lor those who require the execution of documents before a Justice. It has been found necessary during the past week to travel, to Martinborough tor the services of a J.P. and unnecessary expense has been incurred. Representations are being made to the authorities for the appointment of an additional Justice of the Peace. Pastures Improved by Rain. A fail' amount of rain has fallen m this locality during the past few days and has had the effect of considerably improving pastures. Root crops have also benefited by the rain.
