Ten bootmaking firms were named by the Acting Minister of Supply, Sir Frederick Stewart, in the House of Representatives, when he alleged that a "deliberate attempt at war profiteering" had been made in fixing prices "for Army boots.’’ Sir F. Stewart announced that he intended to exercise his special powers under the National Security Regulations to obtain 100,000 pairs of boots at a price to be determined by'arbitration.
