WORKER BALLERINAS

MORE RUSSIAN BALLET. ACTIVITIES IN MOSCOW. Like London, Moscow has open-air theatres for which natural surroundings provide the settings; but in Moscow, as in certain other European cities, the stage of one of the open-air theatres is on an island, being separated from the auditorium by the waters of a lake. The Island of Dance Theatre, which is situated in the Park of Culture and Rest, is principally devoted to ballet, and originated out of the po'pular school for classical ballet in the park. The school and theatre provide a training ground for young artists drawn from the ranks of students and workers, and every autumn numerous applications are received from young people. The two leading ballennes were still working in other ways until quite recently, one as a secretary to a bureau for geological research, the other as a typist.
