FRENCH PRIESTS
FIGHT IN RANKS OF ARMY. More than 500 priests from the Parasian diocese —a third of the total number —are serving with the French Army, it has been revealed by Canon Pasteau, who looks after the affairs of mobilised priests'in that district. Among them are the Abbe Pieat, who is an Air Force colonel, three majors, twelve captains, 134 lieutenants, seven adjutants, 99 sergeants, 34 corporals and 131 private soldiers. Priests all over France have similarly responded, and the War Ministry lists of men killed in action show that the soldier-priests are strongly represented in theyfront line. A 25-year-old officer in charge of a machine and anti-tank gun section said: "In the fortress I am not a priest. I am a soldier, but the commandant permits me to hold services in the long gallery, and the men come when they wish. Some people say it is wrong for a priest to fight, but I believe that a priest should face the same sorrows and dangers as his people."
