INTERHOUSE CONTESTS „ EXCELLENT DISPLAY ON SATURDAY. HOSIERY MILLS SUCCESSFUL. The Wairarapa Inter-house Associate lion's annual sports and drill display ay was held on the Masterton Park Oval /Ir in overcast and threatening weather on n- Saturday afternoon. There was an alii. tendance of about three thousand specr- tators. The brilliant effect of the striking colour combinations of the teams ig drew spontaneous applause from the ;r. spectators during the parade and comjn petitions. Stirring music played by the id Masterton Municipal Band imbued as both spectators and competitors alike r- with an enthusiasm which characterisid ed the sports throughout. th Arduous hours of training under efflof cient coaches culminated in marching et and drilling displays which were per:n formed with regimented precision. id The rifle exercises performed by rele cruits drawn from the local Territorial le units reflected great credit on the ofa fleers and N.C.O.’s The various movers rnents were executed smartly and correctly, and were warmly applauded by 2s the spectators. ). At the conclusion of the massed drill ie and games display the gathering was te briefly addressed by the Hon W. E. in Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, id who expressed pleasure at the outt- standing display presented. He stated .11 that such displays played an all-impor-id tant part in the moulding of the girls’ s- character. They were taught discipline, ie orderliness and precision, attributes of importance, and he believed that the i- displays were an instructive and useful s- part of the life and well being of the community. t- The President of the Inter-house As;e sociation, Mr L. B. Maunsell. expressed d his committee's thanks to the girls for 11 the splendid displays, to the coaches, I- the Masterton Municipal Band for 2. their services, and the public for its it generous support. The special challenge cup for rifle exercises presented by the Wai-| rarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association | was won by No 1 Platoon, C Company, Hawke's Bay Regiment. No 2 Platoon were second, and the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles. 3. ' DANCE AT NIGHT. The Municipal Hall on Saturday night was crowded with 800 dancers when the Inter-house sports gala day function' was brought to a successful conclusion. The floor was in good order and the music supplied by Barnes's Rhythm Boys was much appreciated. The teams made a fine showing as they marched down the hall to the stage and saluted the official party. Mrs L. B. Maunsell. wife of the president, presented the prizes won during the afternoon. Mr G. Daubney, chairman, referred to the many willing workers who had assisted in connection with the interhouse functions. He thanked SergeantMajor C. E. Rogers, N.Z.P.S.. lor his splendid services in the drill and marching and also Mr D. Costello, Mr J. W. Hayden, and the Press.
