TRAMPING CLUB

VISIT TO TOTARA FLATS. MANY DEER & WILD GOATS SEEN. Heavy mist and frequent showers of light rain were experienced by a party of Wairarapa Tramping Club members who visited Totara Flats yesterday. Leaving Masterton at 5.30 a.m. one party proceeded to Dalefield and the other to the bottom of Mt Holdsworth. After inspecting the Kaipaitangata Falls at Dalefield. the first party then followed the pack track along a high ridge to a point where the track drops sharply into the Waiohine River, at Totara Flats. The second party climbed to- Pig Flat on Mt Holdsworth, and from there they followed the new Government tourist track to Totara Creek. and thence to the Waiohine River. The two parties met for lunch at Totara Flats. A remarkable feature of the trip was the number of deer and wild goats which were seen. Great masses of snowy clematis, and native trees in full bloom, made a particularly beautiful sight. On tile trip out from the flats, the first party continued up the new track and down Mt Holdsworth, and the second party followed the pack track to Dalefield. Both parties arrived back in Masterton shortly after dusk. Members of the Wairarapa Tramping Club who made the trip were: Mrs S. Torr, Miss V. McKenzie. Messrs W. J Beresford. B. lorns, M. Small and B. Gillies.
