Reporting to the Auckland City Council, the city engineer. Mr J. Tyler. drew attention to the "lean-to" typo of State house which is beginning to make its appearance in various parts of the city, and expressed the opinion that the matter should be brought under the notice of the Director of Housing. This suggestion was adopted. While, from the architectural point of view, the new type of house possesses all the internal features of other dwellings erected under the Government scheme, it is stated that the type has nothing to commend it because the roof slopes from front to back, similar to the roof of an ordinary shed. "From the viewpoint of external appearance, the lean-to' type of house referred to falls far short of the high architectural standard hitherto maintained by the Housing Department." commented Mi' Tyler in his report to the council. "The one being erected in Long Drive, for instance, is, in my opinion, definitely a blot in the locality."
