CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Calfort Now in Good Heart SHOULD ADD CONSIDERABLY TO WINNINGS
(BY
“CARBINE.”)
The winner of the £50,000 Melbourne Cup sweep two or three years ago, Mr Walter Devon, of Masterton, has a very fine performer in Colfort, who has been well handled by the Opaki trainer Ashley Jenkins. The Melfort—Columbia gelding, born in Australia, displayed disappointing form early this year but has since come along nicely. Fours years old, Colfort won at Levin the other day, this being his first success since the Masterton meeting in October, when he dead-heated with Cherry Picker in the Champion Hack Handicap, being ridden by A. Jenkins. The previous start of Colfort was at the same Masterton meeting when he ran fourth to Great Legion in the Lawn Handicap. Colfort has trained on in good style and is now at about peak form. If he goes to the post well at Feilding next week there will be considerable support for the Masterton representative. Ashley Jenkins has displayed excellent judgment in training the son of Melfort, who should add considerably to his winnings this season.
Should do Better. Mondello did not fulfil the high expectations of track watchers in the Stewart Island Handicap at Invercargill, but she is quite a good sort nevertheless and she will probably be found doing a lot better in the near future. Performer of Class. Set Sail was one of the best mares ever to race in Southland and now) her daughter Sailing Lady is on , the way to maintaining the family re- j putation. In fact Sailing Lady appears to be a handicap performer of class in the making. First Outing foriFoxlove. Foxlove had his first outing for the current term at Invercargill and ran quite a good race for about six furlongs. but he unfortunately was lame afterwards. There has been a doubt about one of his legs for some time. Revelled in Heavy Going. Boaform revelled in the heavy going at Invercargill and ran out the seven furlongs of the Stewart Island Handicap in good style. This was her third win in six starts since she commenced racing last season and she has only to stand up to training to win her way rapidly to open .company. Owner to Train Dictate. A. McAulay, the Riccarton trainer, has parted company with the six-year-old Dictate, as Mr M. O’Brien, the owner, has decided to train the Chief Ruler gelding himself. McAulay had Dictate for about four years and with him secured 11 races and 24 minor placings, His form for a long time has been consistent, but very tantalising. He has not won since the Motukarara spring meeting last year, although he has been placed 12 times. Improvement in Manners. Ortyx was not suited by the heavy going at Invercargill and she did well to hang on for second money after making most of the running. The race will improve the daughter of Lord Warden and it will not be long before she is rewarding her connections for the patient manner in which they have brought her along in her preparation. This one time erratic mare has settled down and the wonderful improvement in her manners is a feather in the cap of her trainer. F. Voight. Should Soon Win. Although she failed to hold her place in the early part of the Southland Cup Mona's Song was finishing on very solidly and she would have done much better on a firm track. She has been second in her two outings this season and should strike winning form any time now.
Ellis to Ride Beau Vite. It is reported that A. E. Ellis will be riding at the Auckland Racing Club s summer meeting, and that he may have the mount on Beau Vite in the Great Northern Derby. Four Thousand Pounds a Minute. Blue Peter, the champion three-year-old of England, has won £42.000 from five starts, running for 10 minutes 10 seconds, which works out at the rate of £4OOO a minute. Maiden Wins Cup. Prior to winning the Queensland Cup, of two miles, in effortless fashion, Spear Vale was a maiden performer. Flashing to the front near the distance. after being eighth at the half mile, Spear Vale outstayed a strong challenge by the Derby winner Spearace, and won by three lengths. Spear Vale is a brother to Spear Chief. Greyhound’s Record. Commenting on the two miles record of 4min 6sec made by Greyhound recently, a writer in the “Horseman has the following: Greyhound trotted both his miles in 2min 3see to set the two mile record at 4min 6sec. The previous record of 4min lOJsec was established at the North Randall track by Peter Manning, in 1925, when driven by Lon McDonald, the gelding trotting the first mile in 2min sJsec and the second in 2min 4 3-ssec. Greyhound was at the quarter in 31sec, the half in Imin 2Jsec, the three-quarters in Imin 33sec Chen trotted the next half in one minute, the mile in 2min 3sec. The sixth quarter was in 311 sec, the seventh in 3Usec. and the eighth in 30Jsec, a runner accompanying’him the last half mile.” Entries for the Gothard Handicap.
