Dr L. S. Talbot has been appointed a member of the Town Planning Board.
Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., has been appointed a member of the Wanganui and Patea Licensing Committee. Earl Winterton has resigned the position of Paymaster-General for private reasons, a London cablegram states. The Hon W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, will leave Wellington this afternoon to open the Stratford agricultural and pastoral show tomorrow.
The Rt Rev G. V. Gerard, Bishop of Waiapu, and formerly of Pahiatua, is visiting Petone for the jubilee celebrations and will preach at special services on Sunday. The following signatures have appeared on the register at the Empire Hotel (Masterton) recently:—Messrs Killoh, Thompson and Baudell (Wellington), Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. (Palmerston North). Visitors to Masterton this week were Mr and Mrs J. Heffernan, of Hastings and formerly of Masterton. Mr Heffernan was -attached to the police force in Masterton over thirty'years ago and has now retired.
Mr E. Caradus, senior inspector of secondary schools, who has relinquished the appointment of honorary educational advisei- to the Air Department, has been appointed Director of Educational Services and posted to Air Headquarters for duty. Visitors attending the fifteenth birthday celebration luncheon of the Masterton Rotary Club held yesterday included Sir Herbert Hart, Messrs J. Caselberg, W. H. Saunders, V. E. Donald, J. Ninnes, R. Page, Dr H. Frolich, of Masterton, and Mr L. L. Cordery of Christchurch. The Hotel Midland (Masterton) has had recently the following guests:— Messrs M. L. Shewan and J. C. McDonald (Auckland), A. Black (Christchurch), F. Fisk (Dunedin), B. Jacobs (Hastings), B. Chambers, J. Burnett, B. Brown and H. K. Wade (Wellington).
The Council of Victoria University College, Wellington, at its meeting last evening, appointed Mr R. O. McGechan, 8.A.. LL.B.. Sydney, to the vacant chair of law in succession to the late Professor James Adamson. Mr McGechan is deputy-professor of law in the University of Sydney. The following officers were elected at the annual conference in Wellington yesterday of the New Zealand Employers' Federation:—President, Mr W. Machin (Christchurch); vice-presi-dent, Mr E. W. Maclean (Wellington): treasurer, Mr G. W. Morgan (Wellington).
Waikato’s All Black, J, G. Wynyard. of Te Awamutu, has been called to the colours and entered the Hopu Hopu military camp on Monday with the rank of second-lieutenant, attached to the Divisional Cavalry of the first echelon. Wynyard toured Great Britain with the 1935 All Black team, and took part in the Australian tour in 1938. He also played, in the All Black trials at the end of last season. The deatli occurred recently of Mr Arthur David Robbie, a former compositor of the Government Printing Office. Mr Robbie worked under six different Government Printers, and was one of the leading hands till his retirement in February this year. For a long time he was president of the Typographical Society and represented that society before the Court of Arbitration on several occasions. Mr Robbie in his younger days took a keen interest in sport, specially football and rowing. He leaves a widow, a daughter, and two sons.
