NON-FAST COLOURS

should be carefully laundered.

Some coloured cottons have fast colours; but not all. Some of them will have colours which, unless cleaned very carefully, will "run." With the former, the washing is simple and similar to that of white articles, but the non-fast colours have to be treated with a difference.

First of all, steep the article in cold salt and water and while this is going on prepare for the other processes, which must be carried through as quickly as possible. Thus, if starch is required, it should be prepared so that it will have time to cool. Then there are the washing, rinsing and fixing waters to be got ready: Moderately warm water for washing: water to which vinegar—to brighten the colours —has been added for rinsing and more salt water as a final bath to fix the colours once again will be needed.

A rapid washing, in which only one article is in the water at the same time, is followed by an equally quick rinsing and starching. The chief things to avoid are: too hot water, too long immersion, the use of strong alkalies like washing soda, drying in the sun, and too hot irons.
