CARTERTON

SHOW STOCK A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR. (“Times-Age" Special.) Mr Martin J. Parker, of Dalefield, had an exceptionally good run with his Holstein cattle at the Egmont Show. The competition in this breed of stock was keen and Mr Parker is to be complimented upon his success. He gained the championship and reserve championship for cow, championship for bull, eight first prizes and six seconds. In the all breed classes his entries secured three seconds and two very highly commended awards. His stock has arrived home again and considering the distance travelled since the Wairarapa Show —first to Palmerston North. Wanganui and lastly to Hawera —they are all in good condition.

GRADY MEDALS WON BY CHALLENGERS. Messrs Thompson and J. Shearer (s) of the Masterton Park Bowling Club played the holders, Messrs Simmonds and Riggs (s) for the Grady Medals at Carterton yesterday. At one stage of the game it looked as if the holders would survive the challenge, but after the first half of the game had bedii finished, the Masterton pair gradually overhauled their opponents and ran out winners by 25/17. They were congratulated by the holders and several members of the Carterton Club who followed the game throughout. Progressive pairs: In a game for the Carterton Club's progressive pairs, A. Thompson and Harp (s) defeated Kilmister and DeLacey last evening. The following rink will represent Carterton in a friendly game against Martinborough on Saturday: —Hill, G. Steven, A. Thompson. W. Hart (s). CALF CLUB CONTESTS PARKVALE DIVISION. The judging of calves in connection with the Boys' and Girls' Club was held at the Parkvale schoolhouse yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of parents and visitors and keen interest was taken in the competitions. Twelve calves and four lambs were' brought forward for competition, and the judge, Mr Hector McKenzie, of the Young Farmers’ Club, carried out his duties in a capable way. He congratulated the children upon the splendid condition in which the animals had been brought forward for judging. After the awards had been made Mr McKenzie proceeded to demonstrate to all present the points upon which he had made his awards.

Mr E. R. Rose thanked Mr McKenzie for having judged the events and for his interesting demonstration. When the awards were made, Mr Lionel Smith, chairman of the committee, presented ribbons of merit to the successful competitors with the donation of two shillings each. The operation of loading and unloading the animals from lorries was greatly facilitated by the use of a loading ramp which the school committee had recently constructed for the purpose. At the conclusion of the day's proceedings the ladies provided much appreciated afternoon tea for the children and visitors. The following are the awards: — Handling: Brenda Morgan, 1; Gwen Adlam, 2; Maureen Thomas, 3; George Howard, 4. Dairy type: George Howard, 1; Sydney Bayliss, 2; Ronald Rose, 3: Brenda Morgah. 4; Maureen Thomas, 5. Lambs (type and condition): Leslie Gugson, 1; Sydney Bayliss, 2; Elva Thomas, 3:; Lola Thomas, 4.

BOY SCOUTS CARD PARTY. The weekly card party held last evening by the committee of the Boy Scouts was not so well patronised as usual owing to wet weather. The prizes were won as follow: —Ladies. Mrs Playle and Mrs Mellish (equal), 1; men: Mr Morris 1, Miss G. Bradbury 2. Lucky number, ladies. Mrs Challis; men. Mr F. Hyde. Personal. Miss Nora Sparks, whose parents reside in Hukanui, and who is well known in Carterton, was knocked down by a motor vehicle in Wellington on Wednesday. She was taken to the Wellington Hospital. Miss Sparks is a student in Wellington and was at one time at D'Urville Island. Mr and Mrs N. Goodin and family, of Te Kauwhatu. Auckland district, are spending a holiday in Carterton. They are slayin.g with Mr Goodin’s mother in Kent Street. They have also been staying at Pukerua Bay. Wellington, and have visited the Centennial Exhibition .They will leave for home by way of Napier and Taupo on Friday.
