GERMAN WAR PLANES
SOME NEW TYPES. Two of the best German aeroplanes in production when the war began were the Heinkel 112 U fighter and the Dornier Dol7 bomber. The Heinkel 112 U fighter is the smaller of two fighter types which Germany had in pro-> duction at the time the conflict started, and its speed ranges from 312 miles an hour to 410 miles an hour. It may be fitted with Daimler-Benz liquid-cooled engines of from 950 to 1200 h.p., or with the smaller Junkers 650 h.p. Jumo 210 engine. The Messerschmidt 109 fighter, the other pursuit aeroplane on which production was being concentrated, is reported to have a top speed of over 400 miles an hour, with 1400 h.p. DaimlerBenz motors. Most of the machines have 1100 h.p. motors and do 370 miles an hour.
The bombers in production when the war began were of three types. The Heinkel 111 K carries 40001 b of bombs lor 2200 miles at 210 miles an hour. The Junkers Ju 86K can do up to 280 miles an hour, with 22001 b of bombs, and has a range of 1600 miles. The Dornier Dol7 bomber has a speed of 292 miles an hour, and a range of 1800 miles with a bomb load of 22001 b. The newer types of Messerschmidt and Heilkel machines are both reported to exceed 400 miles an hour, but since the Germans have not had anything in service equal to the performance of the British machines in production and since Britain announced before the war that two types yet on the secret list wore ahead of even the Spitfires. Hurricanes, and Wellingtons now in commission, it is possible that the Nazis will receive the same rough treatment in the future.
One new German aeroplane, which has been revealed to be in service since the war, is a combat machine for use ns escort for raiding bombers and is designed io fight off the single-seat-er interceptors which arc the chief defence of the nation. The new German aeroplane is the Messerschmiclt 110. powered with two 11 GO h.p. DaimlerBenz engines, with a range of G9O miles and a. speed of 380 miles an hour.
