A recent cable from Australia stated that Yours Truly, winner of the New Zealand Cup, had been sold to an Australian. Later intelligence discountenanced the story, Mr J. S. McLeod’s family stating that no intimation of the sale had been received by them. It is stated that Yours Truly will contest the Auckkland and Wellington Cups. Leading Jockeys. With three wins at Avondale, the lightweight, H. N. Wiggins, retains his position as leading horseman in the Dominion so far this season, with 21 wins. P. Atkins follows with 18. Then W. J. Broughton and W. J. Mudford, each with 12, O. Evans and A. Jenkins 11, and G. R. Tattersail and. B. H. Mor- ’ ris 10. i

To be Given a Spell. Sunbeam was expected to race at Feilding, but he was favouring a leg when he had cooled off after a gallop 'at Awapuni on Monday. Later his ' trainer, C. Thomson, stated that the trouble was located in the shoulder and that Sunbeam would be given a ' spell. Classic Winners. The Melbourne Cup winner Spearfelt, one of the most successful sires : in Queensland in recent years, gained a further triumph when his sons, Spearace and Spear Vale, fought out a , thrilling finish in the Queensland Turf Club Derby a fortnight ago. Spearace, who won the Guineas last month, had a sustained struggle all the way up the straight, and he just gained the day. He might have been a little fortunate, as Spear Vale, who is a brother to that great horse Spear Chief, Derby winner of two years ago, jumped the tan crossing a furlong and ahalf from the post and veered in, but he finished on generously and ran Spearace to a head. Spearace is raced on lease by Mr P. Jennings from his father, the Alma Vale studmaster, Mr T. Jennings, the owner of Spearfelt, who bred the colt. Spearace’s dam, Lozan, is related to a number of high-class performers, among them being Serelot. Lovelot and Ripolot. Spear Vale, in spite of some excellent form, is still a maiden. His Brother, Spear Chief, won the Queensland Sires’ Produce Stakes, Guineas and Derby, and another brother, Brownfelt, after having won the Guineas, won the Tattersall’s Cup and the Metropolitan Handicap. Getting Into Form. Raeburn, now a four-year-old, is apparently settling down to racing solidly if his form at Riccarton and earlier meetings can be taken as a guide. A chestnut gelding by Colossus from Shuffler, a Shambles mare which never raced, Raeburn was bought as a yearling by the Washdyke trainer, P. T. Hogan, for 300 guineas, and was later bought by Mr O. F. Watson, who pass- 1 ed him on to his brother, Mr J. H. Watson, in whose colours he now races. When trained by D. O'Connor, at Riccarton, Raeburn was considered good enough to take on a trip to Melbourne last season, but he did not race up to expectations. Now trained by Mrs A. W. McDonald at Awapuni. Raeburn, though he still has to be coaxed before he will go on to tjie track to work, is showing improved race form. He was placed at Wanganui in September and then won the mile Octo- | ber Handicap at Trentham later in the ' same month. His first effort at the New Zealand Cup meeting was an unplaced run in the Linwood Handicap, and then was third to Knight Commander and Merry March in the Otaio Plate. In winning the Seymour Handicap easily from Night Pal and Not Out, Raeburn put up a solid effort as he had some ground to make up from the straight entrance. From his efforts this season Raeburn has earned £520. Ellerslie Starting Times. Starting times for the Auckland Racing Chib’s first day on Saturday are:— 12.5, Melrose Maiden: 12.50. Milford Handicap; 1.35. Tiri Hurdles; 2.20 Alison Cup; 3.5. Cambria Handicap; 3.55. Takapuna Plate; 4.40, Cheltenham Handicap: 5.25. Ponui Handicap. Good Gallop by Orelio. The best gallop of the season s?en at Takanini was credited to Orelio (Smith), who defeated Anion (Me Minn) by three lengths at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.14 2-5 on Tuesday. Both displayed brilliancy over the early stages, running their first two furlongs in 23 3-5, and the first three furlongs in 35, at which stage they i were together, but once straightened up for his final run. Orelio drew away ; to finish in impressive style. Orelio re- i deemed himself for his temporary ’ lapse last week when lie was defeated ; by Arvakur. and lie is apparently right at the lop of his form.
