TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE The Purchase of Gold Salute NOT SUCH A COLOURFUL STORY

(BY

“CARBINE.”)

The story of the purchase by Mr Alan Cooper of the New Zealand chestnut colt, Gold Salute (Lord Warden—Frenzied Finance) is not as colourful as followers of the turf were at first led to believe judging by the remarks of T. R. George, the well-known trainer, who recently returned from Australia. It is alleged that the price of 10,000 guineas reported to have been paid for Gold Salute was made up mainly of contingencies, which did not eventuate. The actual cash price was 3800 guineas, with another 1000 guineas out of each Derby and the balance from the Melbourne Cup. ..In the circumstances it would appear that Mr Cooper and the former owner-trainer of Gold Salute, Mr G. Paul, must have had a much higher opinion of the colt than many other sportsmen.

Ten in a Row. Beaulivre has now won 10 races in succession and will probably make his next appearance in the King s Plate as a preliminary to the Great Northern Derby. A Difficult Task. Although St. Hippo. Warstep, Scion. Rapier, Fast Passage and Cuddle have won both the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, no horse has ever added the Wellington Cup to that record in one year. The only horse to succeed in the three raj?es was Rapier, who won the New Zealand and Auckland Cups in 1927 and the Wellington Cup in 1926. Enrich’s Achievement. When Enrich won the Pioneer Handicap, he equalled the 35-year-old record of Machine Gun, in covering the five furlongs in 58secs. In the intervening years Paganelli and Amigo, at Trentham, were credited with the same figures, but a resurvey of the course proved it to be short, and their names have has been expunged from the list of New Zealand and Australian records. Enrich, who was purchased at the dispersal sale of the late W. Higgins’ horses, for 225 guineas, has already proved a most profitable investment, having won £770 in two wins. Knight Commander. Knight Commander, who performed well at the New Zealand Cup meeting, has done very little racing, having started only 21 times. At two years he did not race, ran only twice at three, five times at four and seven times at five, scoring only one win in.these 14 starts. Seven outings this season have produced four wins and a second, putting him out of hacks. It is said that he could have been bought some months ago for £5O. Trench Fight’s New Owner. Trench Fight, by Winning Hit from Scrimmage, has been sold by the trustees of the late Sir Charles Clifford. His new owner, is Mr W. Stubbs, and the horse has gone into the stable of C. C. McCarthy. Trench Fight, now a six-year-old, ran some good races earlier in his career. After being narrowly beaten by his stable-mate, Wild Chase, in the Derby, he won the Jockey Club Handicap, a race he captured again two years later, these and other performances entitling him to rank as a very good horse over a mile. Since he ran second to Queen of Song in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton last February, his form has been disappointing, but as he has dropped down m the weights, he may win for his new owner without returning to his best form. Nearly Banned From Competing. Condemned four years ago as not worth thirty shillings, the pacer Bill B. a winner at the Addington carnival, finally, on account of erratic behaviour, had to run the gauntlet of an official investigation. He had to go a trial at Addington to save being banned from the race track. About a year after his arrival in New Zealand he developed liver trouble, which affected other organs, and this caused him to stop in his races. Medical opinion was that the horse’s heart was affected. A veterinarian concurred with the decision, but maintained that the cause was a congested liver. The horse's condition was thought to have been brought about by change of climate. After a spell of six months, during which time he was treated, he resumed work under J. Bryce, and since then has made a complete recovery, and is now on the road to fulfilling the big things expected of him when he was purchased in America for Mr J. R. Brown, of Dunedin. During the four years he has been in the Dominion Bill B has v/on eight races, has been second five times, and third on six occasions. His total stake-earnings are £1649 10s. Bill B has developed into a real stayer, and his two wins at the recent meeting at Addington point to his reaching top class before the season is concluded. Beaupartir in Good Heart. Beaupartir, looking in good heart for big events ahead, was exercised on the plough at Awapuni yesterday. The son of Beau Pere looks improved since he raced at Riccarton and, if everything goes well in the interim, he will be a tough customer to settle later on.
