FEATHERSTON

AILSA MCDONALD CUP FINAL CONTESTS YESTERDAY. — (“Times-Age” Special.) The final contests for the Ailsa McDonald cup were held yesterday afternoon when the boys and girls’ cricket teams from the Martinborough High School visited Featherston. The scores were as follow:—Girls’ game: Martini borough, 55; Featherston, 19. Boys: Martinborough, 45; Featherston. 8. The Featherston girls have held the cup since 1935 and the Martinborough boys have retained possession of the trophy since the inauguration of the contests. Of the five contests this season the Featherston girls were victorious in swimming, athletics, tennis and basketball, losing in cricket only. They thus win the cup for this year. Speeches were made by Miss Card (Home and School Association), Mr J. W. Holland (chairman of the School Committee), Mr Hayes (headmaster at i Featherston), and the Martinborough . headmaster (Mr Pryor). FAREWELL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO P. AND T. OFFICER. The staff of the Post and Telegraph office farewelled Mr J. Thurston yesterday afternoon. The postmaster, Mr J. B. Davis, congratulated Mr Thurston on his promotion to the accountancy branch of the G.P.O. Wellington, and asked him to accept a travelling case accompanied by the best wishes of the staff. Mr Thurston suitably replied. He left for Wellington this morning. TENNIS KAHUTARA CLUB. The Kahutara tennis courts were opened last Saturday by the president. Mr J. C. Bidwill. Mrs Bidwill played the first ball over the net. There was a good attendance, the weather being ideal. The courts are in very good order. A ladies’ committee served afternoon tea. BOWLING CLUB CHAMPION PAIRS. In a game for the champion pairs yesterday James and Bloxam beat Fuge and Rolls, 23/22.
