CHIANG AS PREMIER

KUOMINTANG ELECTION IN CHINA

PLANS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE CO-ORDINATION. MAINTENANCE OF RESISTANCE TO JAPAN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. NEW YORK. November 20. The Chungking correspondent of the American United Press says the sixth plenary session of the Koumintang elected General Chiang Kai-Shek Premier in succession to Dr H. H. Kung, who was elected vice-president of the executive and remains Finance Minister. A manifesto covering the most important decisions of the session says it was decided to convene the National People’s Assembly within a year, to expedite the reconstruction of the municipal governments, and to continue resistance to Japan. The manifesto also expresses gratitude to foreign Powers for their assistance and urges the setting up of a world organisation for collective security after the war. Politicians say that General Chiang’s assumption of the Premiership is designed to make possible effective coordination. It is understood that Mr T. V. Soong, the financial expert, will remain in Chungking and will henceforth give his attention exclusively to monetary affairs. Mr Yeh Chu-chang has been appointed secretary of the Kuomintang, and General Wit Teh-chen, former mayor of Shanghai, Chief of the Foreign Affairs Department.
