Yesterday morning the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, left by air for Blenheim to pay a visit of inspection to the local military aerodrome and later to address the Marlborough Provincial Patriotic Council. Mr Arthur James Birt, a former resident of Pahiatua, died at Wellington yesterday in his 85th year. The Hon W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, returned to Wellington from Auckland today. The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, returned to Wellington from the South Island yesterday. Mr J. V. Dooling was appointed custodian of the borough baths by the Masterton Borough Council last night. The death occurred yesterday at Wanganui of Mr Joseph Beaumont, formerly of Martinborough, at the age of 71 years. Mr W. B. Russell, formerly of the Union Bank of Australia in Wellington, has been transferred to Greymouth. where he will be manager of the branch of the bank. The Hon P. C. Webb. Minister of Labour, left Wellington today for the Wanganui, Taranaki and Auckland districts. He expects to return to Wellington early next week. Miss J. L. Fowler has been granted permission by the Masterton Borough Council to leach swimming, etc, at the C. and A. and public baths in Masterton.
The Rev W. E. Falkingham, formerly of Christchurch and now of Dunedin. passed examinations and has been recommended as a candidate for the full ministry of the Methodist Church of New Zealand.
At the Methodist synod meeting at Wellington yesterday afternoon the resignations of the Revs R. R. Keall (Eketahuna) and J. H. Haslam (Brooklyn) were received. Mr Keall has served for 41 years and Mr Haslam for 40 years. Messrs J. Fagan and Martindale. Wellington, T. Tanner, Christchurch; Capt. F. K. Allen, H. Holland, H. Reeves, Thorburn, Wellington; J. Beavin, Napier; Brian, Hastings; Peterson, T. Tyrell, Palmerston North are guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton.
At a meeting of directors of Todd Motors Corporation Ltd. held on Thursday. November 16. Mr James Fletcher, managing director of the Fletcher Construction Co., Ltd., was appointed to fill the vacancy on the directorate caused by the death of Mr Edwin P. Yaldwyn. The death occurred on Monday at the Masterton Hospital of Mr Tauru Pahira Anaru, a well-known native of Gladstone at the age of 75 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow, and will leave the late residence, Gladstone, at 2 p.m. for the Gladstone Native Cemetery.
Pastor Helmut Rehbein, of the Confessional Church, Germany, was received into the ministry of the. Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the General Assembly in Christchurch. He was appointed for three years to the lectureship in Church History at the Theological Hall, Knox College, Dunedin.
At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. Councillor H. E. Gardner was appointed to represent the council at the annual Dominion conference of the Park Superintendents’ Association, and Mr H. Sturgeon was granted leave of absence to attend the conference which is to be held from January 30 to February 3, 1940. Commissioner Alfred G. Cunningham, has been appointed chief-of-staff to headquarters of the Salvation Army in London. Originally bent on a scholastic career, Alfred Cunningham made contact with the Salvation Army in 1889. and the next year became an officer. After a short period in the training garrison in England he was transferred to similar work in South Africa. There he found a congenial outlet for his talent for organisation. He was soon appointed a corps commander in Capo Town, and later in Johannesburg, stepping-stones to his election to bo chancellor of the Northern Province and head of the Feld Department. After filling a number of other important positions, he was appointed international secretary for Europe and the British Dominions in 1930. In 1933 he married Colonel Colbourne, national slum and goodwill secretary. Commissioner Cunningham is 69 years of age.
