OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
PIG PRODUCTION (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln my capacity as representative on the executive of the National Pig Council I will be grateful for permission to use your valuable columns in order to advise all producers of pigs that the National Executive has been informed that there will be ample supplies of supplementary grain feeding material available to meet every need of the present season, at prices slightly lower than those ruling last year. With this assurance farmers can now make their plans accordingly and it is confidently hoped that everyone will make an earnest effort to fatten the greatest possible number of pigs to baconer weight, so that we may export the maximum tonnage of pig flesh as desired by the Imperial Government. To this end the Wellington District Council places the resources of its organisation and advice entirely at the disposal of farmers who are invited to avail themselves of the services of our supervisor. Mr E. P. Neilson, who will make personal visits, for instructional purposes and guidance where requested. The executive was also advised that the Marketing Board, after due deliberation, had decided upon the following weight ranges and prices:— 1011 b to 1801 b. first grade. 6 l-8d; second grade. s?d. Unexportable pigs:—lollb to 1601 b, 6 l-8d first quality; second quality 5 : ;d; 1611 b to 1801 b. 3 l-8d per lb. Unexportable because of blemishes (bruising etc);—1011b to 1601 b, 4 1-t’d; 1611 b to 1801 b. 31d per lb. There are no quotations for pork and no porkers will be accepted for export till the end of February, when prices will be announced. All producers should especially note that vendors of baconers up till the end of February will be given preference in the contribution of porkers after that date under the 25 per cent allocation. This decision has been made in order to stimulate the production of pigs in the heavier weight ranges during the period when dairy by-products are in plentiful supply. It is the hope of my council that every farmer will continue with, his normal breeding and fattening policy and avail himself of whatever assistance the district organisation can offer. —I am, etc.. B. E. KIELLER. President. Wellington District Council.
