RAID WARNINGS
SOUNDED IN THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND PLANE SEEN AT GREAT HEIGHT. INTERESTED SPECTATORS IN LONDON. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, November 20. Air raid warnings were sounded in the South-East of England tonight. An unidentified plane, flying at a great height, was sighted from a South Coast port. Anti-aircraft guns opened fire and shells burst around the plane, from which it emerged trailing a long stream of smoke. The plane made off eastwards. Spectators saw British fighters in pursuit of the same plane when it was sighted over the Thames Estuary, South Kent, and Essex. When it appeared over South-East England, on the outskirts of London, thousands of people rushed into the streets and watched the shellfire. Shrapnel fell into the streets. Eyewitnesses describe the machine as similar to the Heinkel bomber. The plane apparently escaped to sea. A Paris message states that air raid warnings were sounded in Normandy and the Rbont Valley and the “all clear” an hour later. VISIT TO ORKNEYS RAIDER CHASED BY PURSUIT PLANES. (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, November 20. The people of the Orkneys, warned by gunfire, saw an enemy reconnaissance plane over the southern isles. Sirens sounded and soon afterwards pursuit planes drove the raider to sea. Nazi planes which flew over the Shetlands on November 17 dropped heavy bombs, as indicated by a hole in a hillside, while two objects were seen falling into the sea.
