Rarotonga Wins at Levin TAURANGI SCORES IN WAIKATO CUP CHIEF EVENT AT SOUTHLAND GOES TO SAILING LADY

(BY

“CARBINE.”)

At the Levin Racing Club's meeting on Saturday last the chief event, the Levin Handicap, was won by an outsider in the Philamor gelding, Rarotonga, trained by A. Jenkins, of Opaki. Rarotonga came with a great rush on the outside and overhauling Trebor near the post won in a very creditable manner. Another Masterton horse in Colfort also secured a win, while the last race went to the Tauherenikau-trained Auto- ... elite. The Waikato Cup was won by Taurangi after a solid effort, being at the finish half a length ahead of Balinavar who appeared to be somewhat unlucky. Sailing Lady had a comfortable win in the Southland Cup and was not really extended at any part of the race, the only one to trouble her at al! being Mona’s Song.

LEVIN MEETING FLYING A'CRE WINS MEMORIAL. RAROTONGA SUCCEEDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) LEVIN, November 19. ? Surprise at Levin. I Rarotonga brought off a surprise in the Levin Handicap on Saturday. His win was meritorious, as when he went , up on the outside of the leading bunch on the turn, which included the two favourites. Corroboree and The Bigot, l' the whole lot ran very wide. This i gave Trebor. the whipper-in. a great , run through on the rails, of which he , took full advantage, but Rarotonga shook himself clear in time and overhauled Trebor near the post. The Bigot was a poor third. Seccnd Successive Victory. Having her third start of the season, the four-year<)ld Taurangi scored her second successive victory when she won the Waikato Cup on Saturday. Taurangi registered a solid performi ance. but Balinavar appeared very uni lucky. He was in the rear most of the way after losing ground at the start and came home attractively. Golden Sheila made a good showing, being handily placed throughout. Balinavar gave a little trouble at the post and was not quite straight on when the start was made, losing several lengths. Royevrus ran to the front quickly and led past the stand from Golden Sheila, Taurangi, Windsor Chief and Birthday Boy, with Balinavar last. Turning along the back, Royevrus led from Windsor Chief, Te Hai, Golden Sheila, Sly Fox, Taurangi and Entail. Near the six furlong post Birthday Boy] made' a sharp run on the outside and at the top was fourth behind Royevrus Te Hai and Windsor Chief. Entering the straight Royevrus just led from Te Hai. Birthday Boy and Golden Sheila, with Taurangi coming fast on the outside. ahead of Sly Fox and Entail. The leaders bunched at the distance and a little further on Taurangi was in front to score by half a length from Balinavar. who finished fast on the outside. Totalisator Investments. From the beginning of the present racing season. August. 1. to the end of last week, approximately £1,400,000 has passed through the lotalisators in the Dominion as compared with £l.210,000 during the corresponding season last year. Passaform Recovering. It is reported that Passaform was ■ suffering from a slightly poisoned leg when he ran in the New Zealand Cup. ' He has made a good recovery, and is to be prepared for the Dunedin Christ- t mas meeting. , Tatiramai Finns Third. < Taurarnai. winner of the 1935 Dunedin Cup, is in work again al Riverton, t and the other day beat Lochie River c over seven furlongs in Imin. 37secs. < The former ran third in the Tradesman’s Handicap on Saturday at the Southland meeting, but has not won a race since he scored in the Great Au-| f tumn Handicap in April. 1935. ,
