Mr A. N. Campbell, of Wanganui, who was magistrate and district officer in British North Borneo for four years, was called upon to act as interpreter in a trial in the Supremo Court at Wanganui. The charge was of wounding with intent to do bodily harm. The form of oath administered to a Malay is an unusual one and is:— "1 swear to speak the truth. If I don't I hope I drop dead. If I go down to the river to bathe I hope a crocodile will eat me. If I climb a tree I hope I will fall and kill myself and pigs will eat mo. I will not tell lies."
