WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION FOURTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT. REVIEW OF PAST SEASON. The following is the annual report of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association to be presented to the annual meeting on November 30: — Affiliated Clubs: Eketahuna, Lansdowne. St. Matthew's, St. Patrick’s and Te Ore Ore clubs resigned from the association. Association Tournament: The annual tournament (championship and handicap) was held in conjunction with the North Island championships on the Masterton Club's courts, and was most successful. The individual number of competitors was one more than • the previous year (76 men and 56 women), and were from all parts of the Dominion. The following were the winners of the respective championship events: • —Men’s singles (44 entries): P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa). Men’s doubles (24 entries): M and R. McL. Ferkins (Wellington). Women’s singles (18 entries): Miss M. Glenny (Hawke's Bay). Women’s doubles (12 entries): Mrs J. Cotterill and Miss M. Glenny (Hawke's Bay). Mixed doubles (30 entries): Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth (Wairarapa). Boys' singles (17 en-
tries): A. M. Johns (Manawatu). Girls' singles (20 entries): P. Longton (Hutt Valley Sub-Association). It is a matter for keen regret that Miss Bocldington, through ill-health, has been compelled to relinquish her

The Association extends to her its grateful . thanks, and best wishes for a speedy return to good health. The 1940 Association's annual tournament will be held on Friday 19, Saturday 20, Monday 22 (Anniversary Day), Tuesday 23. and. if necessary, Wednesday 24th January. Association matches: Matches wore played against Hawke’s Bay, al Masterton, for the Christie Cup, which Hawke's Bay succeeded in winning easily, and Manawatu. at Masterton. the visitors being victorious. The following players represented the Association in the matches played: Mesdames P. Hawksworth, L. D. Keedwell,
G. S. McLeod. A. H. Ward: Misses D. Allan. J. M. Betts. K. M. Milne: Messrs Coney. O. Grant, P. Hawksworth. M. Hobson, E. M. Hodder, L. D. Keedwell, J. B. McPherson, G. S. McLeod. Roydhouse Buttons: Many challenges were played during the year. Mr P. Hawksworth and Dr. H. M. O'Connor (.Masterton Club) being the holders at the end of the season. Vaughan Buttons (C grade players): This competition again brought forth many challenges, Messrs W. V. Buick and C. ■ Welch (Mount Bruce Club) being the ■ present holders. Inter-club Teams Competitions.— Senior (Gawith Shield: 4 Clubs competed); "B,” 8 clubs; "C." 9 clubs. These matches, as in the past, created keen competition. The winners of the respective sections were: "Gawith Shield,' Masterton Club: "B." Masterton Park Club; and "C," Memorial Club. Tournament.—The Martinborough Club’s Annual Tournament was quite successful. It is to be regretted that, owing to many difficulties, no tournament will ; be held at Martinborough this year. . Schools’ Tournament. —Only the Nor- | them Primary School Tournament was held, and again thanks are due to Mr J. A. Kennedy and his helpers for staging it. At the end of last year, Mr S. R. Gawith. who has been President of your Association since its inception in 1925, decided to resign his office, and his resignation was accepted with the ] keenest regret. During his long term of j office Mr Gawith has proved himself ( a most capable leader and a sound ad- ( ministrator. and under him the Association has progressed and prospered, ( Your committee therefore wishes to place on permanent record its real appreciation of his work, and hopes that, though ho has resigned office, he will still lake an interest, in tennis, and continue to give his support in furthering its progress. During the year the Association was j
honoured by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, which body select-: ed this Association’s very capable honorary secretary. Mr H. M. Boddington, as Manager of the Junior Tennis Team visiting Australia. As was to be expected. Mr Boddington carried out his duties in a most capable manner, and his report to the New Zealand Association gave that, body every satisfaction. The Committee desires to place on record its thanks and appreciation to the Masterton Club for tile use of its courts for the Inter-Association matches, and its lady members for pro- 1 viding afternoon tea at both matches; Messrs N. W. Groves, E. R. Maunsell, 11. M. A. Major. R. W. Roydhousc, Claude Welch, T. Wyeth. Van Staveren Bros Ltd, for donations; the many willing helpers (particularly the umpires) at the Tournament.
