BENES CONFIDENT
SAYS CZECHS WILL NEVER SUCCUMB DEFIANCE OF NAZI TERROR. JAN MASARYK’S ANTICIPATION. LONDON. November 18. The exiled Czech leader, Dr Benes, in a statement made in London today, said that Czechoslovakia would never succumb to the reign of terror. The execution of the students was strangely reminiscent of what happened in Belgium in the last war. Their killing would have the same effect on the Czech public as Nurse Cavell’s assassination on the British. M .Jan Masaryk, the former Czech Minister in London, considers that there is not yet any great revolt against the Nazi aggression in the Czech protectorate, because it would at present, be premature and stupid, but he is of the opinion that, the time will come. He adds that Herr Hitler and the Nazis will disappear after the failure of their systematic plan for the denationalisation and economic ruin of the Czechs. The Czech legation in Washington and Consulates throughout the United States flew Hags at half-mast on Saturday as a mark of respect for those killed in the disturbances, a radio message states. Such an action for ordinary citizens, it is pointed out. has not been taken for many years.
