HOUSEHOLD HINTS

USEFUL TO THE HOUSEWIFE. To make a new broom last longer, soak it in hot salted water before using. The salt toughens the bristles. When cleaning flannels, silks, mauve linens, and other like materials, add a teaspoonful of salt both to the soaking and the rinsing water. If valuable vases are being used for table decoration, fill them one-fourth full of sand to prevent them from being tipped over. After mincing meat, pass a few pieces of dry bread through the machine to clean it. Dried fruits—dates, figs. etc. —will go through more readily if a little lemon juice has fir,si been poured into the machine, and the subsequent cleaning will be simplified. When clamping the mincing machine to the kitchen table, instead of slipping in a fold of newspaper to make it grip, use a fold of sandpaper or emery-paper. It will ensure the grip.
