CHRISTMAS FAIR

IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUND. PROMOTED AS COMMUNITY EFFORT. The Christmas Fair to be held in the Municipal Hall on December 1 is a broad community effort on behalf of the Provincial Patriotic Fund and is approved and supported by the Mayor of Masterton. Mr T. Jordan, in whom, together with the chairmen of county councils and the mayors of boroughs in the area, the district zone committee has delegated the right to approve authorised collectors for the Provincial Patriotic Fund. Making clear the purpose of the fair, tn a brief statement today, the member for Masterton (Mr J. Robertson) said that some considerable time ago the local branch of the Labour Party decided to run a Christmas Fair to raise funds for party purposes. When war broke out, however, and the Prime Minister made an appeal for united support of the national war effort. Mr Robertson suggested to the local Labour organisation that in' the state of affairs which had now arisen the faitshould be run for national purposes. This was at once agreed to by all concerned and it was decided to seek the co-operation of all citizens, irrespective of party leanings, in running the fair in aid of the Patriotic Fund. The whole of the money raised will go to that fund to provide comforts and amenities for our men on service.

"In this connection." said Mr Robertson, “I am very glad to state that the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers’ Association has offered its full co-opera-tion. This has been accepted gratefully and it is hoped that all citizens will assist to make this effort one worthy of the district and really useful. The Borough Council has granted the use of the Municipal Hall and its equipment for the fair and this is very much appreciated. "Various women’s organisations in the.town and district have been approached with a request for their cooperation and support." Mr Robertson added. "This has already been promised in many cases and a good all-round response is anticipated confidently.
