SPRING FRAGRANCE
FLOWERS IN ANZAC HALL EXCELLENT EXHIBITION. OPENING BY SIR 11, BATTERBEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) An excellent display of flowers graced Anzac Hall. Featherston, yesterday. when the Featherston Horticultural Society held its Spring Show. After being welcomed by the Mayor. Mr J. W. Card, Sir Harry Batterbee. United Kingdom Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, officially opened the show. He was accompanied by his niece, Miss Isobel Biggar. There was a large attendance of the public. . Sir Harry Batterbee said the display of flowers clearly indicated that the people of Featherston and district were experts in the garden. After referring to the advantages of the fact that they had falen in love with said he admired the native flora of this country and said that some of the plants had become well known in England. On the other hand, it was only natural that people coming to New Zealand from England grew English plants, some of which flourished even to greater perfection than they did in the Mother Country. He had two qualifications to come there to open the show—both he and his wife were great lovers of flowers and gardens and they made no secret of the fact that they had fallen in love with the Wairarapa district. The judge of the decorated class commended the society on its beautiful display. The competitors were not very ambitious as far as the actual make-up of the floral work was concerned. The sprays and bouquets were very sweet and the other decorative classes showed great talent. Next year the competitors might well turn some of their energies and aptitude towards bouquet and posy making. The judges were:—Decorative. Mrs Bennett, Wellington; roses and sweet pea, Mi’ Hale, Masterton; cottage garden, Mr Waugh, Lower Hutt; home produce, Miss Una Carter (Wellington); homework, Mrs Syme, Tauherenikau; vegetables.
