Accounts amounting to £3400 13s 7d were passed for payment. Receipts since the last meeting totalled £97 17s Id. The water race overseer’s reports regarding the Carrington water races and the Taratahi water races were read and adopted. Mr H. A. Trueman, sanitary inspector, reported that the health position in the county was satisfactory. Invitations were received from the governors of the Sedgley Boys’ Home to the official opening of the new home on November 27. An invitation was also received to attend the opening of the Hutt Anglican Boys’ Home. It was decided owing to Christmas holidays that the next meeting be held on December 14, the January meeting on January 25 and the February meeting on February 22. It was resolved that the County- Office close down for the Christmas holidays from Thursday, December 21. to Monday, January 15, inclusive. A letter was received from the Highways Board complaining of wandering stock on East Coast roads. Further letters were received regarding wandering stock. One complainant said that on one occasion over 100 cattle were allowed to graze on East Coast roads. A discussion took place in regard tc the matter and Councillors were of the opinion that the reports were a little exaggerated. There was no doubt stock did graze on the roads. The danger was not so bad in day time, thoughat night time wandering cattle were a real danger. It was resolved that Councillors Court and Reid arrange for the employment of a dog tax collector and ranger and that they have power to act in the matter. It was decided that the Maungaraki Riding Councillors be a committee having power to arrange for repairs, painting, etc, of the workmen’s cottages in the riding. Mr L. Rossiter was granted permission to take water from the Taratahi water race subject to the overseers approval. In connection with the Taratahi races the overseer stated that there have been no floods in the river during the past month, but heavy winds filled the intake with leaves and gorse. On Labour Day persons unknown cut most ol the water off the main race which supplies all the races feeding the Plains, Waihakeke, Carterton and Clareville by placing a big board across the main weir at Spooner’s. A shortage of water occurred on one side and the other side was flooded. Borthwick and Sons have supplied a 2ft pipe to replace two old pipes, a 12in and a 9in in the race that feeds their dam. These small pipes are always blocking up and turning too much water down the races, causing great flooding at the railway line. He hoped to be able tc put this pipe in this coming week. Leaks have been repaired in parts ol the Carrington area, and rubbish blown into the races has been removed. Some cleaning has been carried out on parts of the races through Messrs Reid. Carder, Parker and Jensen's • properties. Cattle cut away the side of the race on Carders.’ and bad places, have been timbered up and filled with bouldets.
