GERMAN RAIDER

OPERATING ON AFRICAN COAST NOT POCKET BATTLESHIP. SINKING OF AFRICA SHELL DENIED. Rv Telegraon—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day. 12.15 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, November 16. The Navy Office confirms the sinking of the Africa Shell, which apparently occurred on November 15, as a civil pilot flying over the area saw the ship sinking and lifeboats on a nearby beach. Other reports say the crew were allowed to land in lifeboats at Inhambane, but the captain was taken prisoner. Persistent rumours that the raider was a pocket battleship are authoritatively denied. All shipping has been warned. An earlier message said the raider was believed to be an armed merchantman of 10,000 tons.
