Ideal weather prevailed on the Miramar links for the New Zealand golf championship tournament yesterday, and competitors took advantage of the conditions to prove that the Dominion standard of play is high. A. Murray, the unattached Auckland professional, in the semi-final of the professional championship in the morning covered the course in 66, taking 33 both ways. J. P. Hornabrook, the Masterton amateur, who won the open championship last week, went out in 31 in the third round of the amateur championship and was 56 for 15 holes , when he beat J. D. Nash, the Rangi- ; marie chqmpion, by 5 and 4. ' As a result of the day’s play J. P. ■ Hornabrook (Masterton), A. R.‘Kitto (Seafield), R. F. Kitto (Seafield) and ' B. M. Silk (Wanganui) came through ' to fight out the semi-finals of the amateur championship over 36 holes today, , When Hornabrook will meet R. F. Kit- < to and A. R. Kitto will play Silk. In the professional championship A. Murray (Auckland) and T. S. Galloway (Rotorua) came through to fight out the final over 36 holes today. Following are lhe results of yesterday's play:— Professional Championship. Semifinals: A. Murray beat W. Allbon, 2 and 1; T. S. Galloway beat B. Stratmofe, 5 and 4. Amateur Championship. • Third round: J. P. Hornabrook beat J. D. Nash, 4 and 3; R. F. Kitto beat R. H. Glading, 1 up; A. R. Kitto beat K. Glendinning, 5 and 3; B. M. Silk beat J. B. Tunnell, 4 and 2. HORNABROOK’S BRILLIANCE. Hornabrook was at the top of his form against J. D. Nash, the Rangimarie club champion, in the third

round of the amateur championship. He started off with an eagle 3 at the first hole (425 yards), and landed his drive off the second tee a couple of yards from the mouth of the green. Nash hooked his tee shot out of bounds, and, playing three off the tee, put his next shot in a bunker to the right of the green. He exploded out too strongly, and picked up. Hornabrook holing out in 3 to be 2 up. Nash had a chance of getting one back when Hornabrook found the rough with his drive off the third tee. but the Rangimarie player badly pushed his brassie second out into the rough, and the holo was halved in 5. Hornabrook hit a splendid No 2 iron shot into the wind off the fourth tee, which split the pin all the way. and pulled up about three yards beyond the cup. Nash, who was taking part in his first national tournament, was obviously nervous, and badly duffed his drive, Hornabrook drawing 3 up with 3 to 4. After being in a bunker with his second at the fifth. Nash got a half in 4 by sinking a 32-foot putt. They halved the short sixth in 3. and Hornabrook drew 4 up with an eagle 3 al the seventh (420 yards), and missed a five-foot putt for a birdie 3 at the eighth. A perfect birdie 3 at the ninth enable Hornabrook to turn for home with the commanding lead of 5 up. His out journey of 31 equalled A. E. Guy’s effort.

Nash gave a taste of his quality by winning both the tenth (490 yards) and the eleventh (470 yards) with birdie 4’s, which reduced his leeway to three down. Hornabrook drew 4 up again by sinking a 42-foot putt for a birdie 2 at the short twelfth. Nash got one back with 4 to 5 at the thirteenth, and they halved the fourteenth in bogey 4. The end came at the fifteenth, which Horn-

abrook took in a birdie 4 to 5. which gave him the match by 4 and 3. The open champion was 56 for the fifteen holes played. R. Kitto (Seafield) once again showed what a good match player he is by, defeating a strong opponent, R. H.' Glading, the Hamilton champion. Out in 37, Kitto was 2 up at the turn, and 3 up at the thirteenth. Glading won the next two holes, and the last three holes were halved, which gave Kitto the match by 1 up. Seafield scored another victory when A. Kitto outplayed K. Glendinning (Manawatu) to the tune of 5 and 3. Kitto did a brilliant out journey of 33‘ to turn for homo 4 up. His figures for lhe first nine were:—444342444. He maintained his steadiness on the home run, which he did in 5444443 to take the match by 5 and 3. B. M. Silk (Wanganui) was 2 down to J. B. Tunnell (Rangimarie) at the turn, but played brilliant golf on the home journey to take the match by 4 and 2. Silk won five holos in a row. his figures for the home run being 443434244.
