TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
FOURTH BIRTHDAY.
CELEBRATED IN MASTERTON,
The Savage Club was filled to overflowing on Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being the fourth birthday celebrations of the Masterton branch of the Dominion Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds: Masses of flowers artistically arranged by members of the Gardening Circle adorned the hall.
The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by the Aspiration and a prayer for peace.
Mrs W. H. Judd presided and was presented by Mrs Conly, on behalf of the Guild members, with a beautiful bouquet of roses. A hearty’welcome was extended to all present, especially to Mrs Jameson, a member of the Dominion Executive, and to Mrs L. F. Smith, of the Brooklyn Townswomen's Guild. Representatives were also present from the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes and from various Women’s Institutes. Each of the visitors was presented with a shoulder spray.
The candles on the handsome twotier birthday cake were lit by Mrs J. Robertson, and extinguished by Mrs Jameson. Mrs Judd cut the cake.
Two items by the Singing Circle, under the leadership of Miss D. O’Donnell. were much appreciated. These were “Greeting to Spring” and “Derry Vale.” A delicious afternoon tea was then served by the committee. The main feature of the afternoon’s programme then followed, a one-act play produced by Mrs J. Hair, leader of the Drama Circle. The play, “Tangled Skeins,” was well acted by the following cast: —Mesdames Hair, Brown, Diggle, Douglas, Downes and Jarvis, and the period frocks worn were much admired. Special thanks are due to Mr Cody for kindly loaning furniture for the stage. The arts and crafts display of work done during the year under the leadership of Mrs P. R. Welch created great interest, many fine articles of handicraft being on view. The winner of the top tier of the cake was Joan Whittaker.
The singing of the Guild Ode concluded a most successful and enjoyable gathering.
