CALVES AND LAMBS
AGRICULTURE CLUB CONTEST. JUDGING AT WEST TARATAHI. (“Times-Age” Special.) . The first function of the season in connection with the Boys’ and Girls' Agriculture Clubs, took place yesterday afternoon when the children of West Taratahi School presented their calves and lambs for judging in the calf and lamb rearing competition. There was a very good gathering of over fifty parents, residents and others interested, including Messrs E. Rayner, chairman of the group committee; H. W. Hesse, supervisor of agriculture and science instruction to the Wellington Education Board, and* F. C. Brockett, instructor in agriculture in the Wairarapa district. The stock was judged by Mi' J. Fisher Junr.. of the Young Farmers’ Club, who made awards as below: — Calves, dairy typo: Peggy Daysh. 1; Jack Anderson. 2: James Gunn, 3: Lorna Edwards. 4. Calves, care and handling: James Gunn, 1; Ray Blake. 2; Till Daysh. 3; Fred Playle, 4. Lambs, blackface: Ray Daysh. I; Olga Reidy, 2; Valmai Playle, 3; Doreen Playle. 4. Lambs, long wool: Rex Blake, I,' Lorna Edwards. 2; Campbell Daysh. 3; Gordon Edwards, 4. After judging, the judge gave an interesting and instructive address on the strong and weak points of the calves and explained the reasons for his awards. While his remarks were intended primarily for the beneiit ot intchildren they were appreciated by the older section of his audience as well. Morning tea was served by a ladies’ committee after which' the gathering was addressed by Messrs J. Daysh, chairman of the School Committee; Hesse, Brockett. Rayner and Fisher. The speakers stressed the value to the children of the competitions, the splendid co-operation between children, teacher. committee and parents which made the show such a success, the excellent service given by the judge, the interest taken by the education authorities in the movement and. not least, the thanks of all to the ladies who provided and served refreshments.
It is very gratifying to those who manage the organisation to find the co-operation that is developing between the Boys' and Girls' Clubs and the Young Farmers' Club. This co-op-eration is forging a link between the school and the farmer than cannot fail to prove of great benefit lo both.
