Animal Hospital.
It is not generally known that the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has in Chancery Lane an animal hospital, where injured and sick animals—dogs, cats, an'd children’s pets—can receive attention. This hospital has been established by the society as an adjunct to its other activities, and it is in keeping with the activities of societies in Australia. where quite large animal hospitals have been established, some with considerable staffs.
Complaints to Councillors; Members of the Christchurch City Council not infrequently receive anonymous protests against individual opinions they voice at council meetings. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macl'ariane. M.P.) himself receives scores of pretests ol that sot. every year. This was disclosed at the meeting of the council when Cr J. D. Carey protested against receiving. on the council table, an anonymous religious pamphlet.' sent from an address in Auburn. Victoria, Australia. The pamphlet, which merely summarised Biblical texts, with some rambling comment, was, according to the sender, designed to create a “chain of prayer for peace and guidance." Cr Carey, protesting against its tone, said he had received anonymous letters about, decisions made at. the council table. Other councillors asserted that they had had the same experience. But the Mayor, claiming that he received very many letters of the same sort and many far worse, told the council that such things ought to be ignored. “They are simply handy for lhe wastepaper basket."
