EKETAHUNA
. LAWN TENNIS CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Eketahuna Lawn Tennis Club for the 1939-40 season took place at the courts at Eketahuna on Saturday. Despite rather adverse weather conditions, there was a large attendance of members, and the public generally, and a fair sprinkling of players from the various neighbouring clubs. The visitors were welcomed by the President. Mr H. E. Greathead, who invited them to make use of the club’s courts on any occasion they were in Eketahuna. The club patron. Mr V. ,G. Wimsett. congratulated the club on the number of players in its ranks, which, he said, augured well for the future of the game in the district this season. He then called on Mrs Wimsett, who hit the first ball over the net and formally declared the season opened. Afternoon tea was then served by the lady members of the club, after which games were played by the members and visitors. An inter-club match against the Kaiparoro club will be played at Kaiparoro during (the weekend, and any of the following players who will be unable to play are requested to kindly advise the secretary, Mr W. Quinlivan: Mrs J. Pickering, Misses P. O'Regan, W. Dickson, E. Robinson, K. Herbert and B. Fraser; Messrs J. Pickering, Quinlivan, Hornblow, Taylor. Fraser and Mcßride. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT KAIPARORO. At the monthly meeting of the Kai- ! paroro Women's Institute. Mrs C. Buri ton presiding over a good attendance of members. i After the opening as usual and the business had been dealt with. Mrs Burton gave a very interesting report on the Council meeting held at Hamua. i A number of the Eketahuna Institute ladies visited the meeting and kindly entertained members with a very amusing play. Competitions for the month were won as follow:—Flower, Miss B. Parry (polyanthus). 1. Mrs Braddick (tulip), 2. Sponge Roll. Miss-A. Dick, 1. Mrs Braddick 2. Best laundered tablecloth. Mrs G. Dick 1, Mrs Burton, 2. A games competition, conducted by Miss Isakson, was won by Miss E. Dick. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames Braddick. Wolland and Miss R. Braddick. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. OXLEY BOWLING CUP WON BY DANNEVIRKE. A challenge for the Oxley Cup. held by Eketahuna was successful when a Dannevirke rink beat the holders. 22-19. during the weekend. The teams were as follow:—Eketahuna: W. Simpson, J. Tolley. W. Hornblow and H. Rogers (skip). Dannevirke: N. Gandell. H. E. Young, S. H. Petherick and J. J. Britland.
