MONTHLY MEETING HELD TODAY l — MANAGING-SECRETARY’S REPORT. SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT PAYMENTS. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board was held at Masterton today. The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, presided, there being also present: Mesdames J. Robertson, S. Fletcher, Misses H. Card, C. Kenny, and Messi's W. I. Armstrong, F. S. H. Bolton, A. Clark, P. R. Welch, W. Britland. D. McGregor, A. Forsberg, W. B. Martin. C. T. Richardson, J. F. Thompson, F. Court. H. Thomas and J. A. McLeod. An apology for absence was received , from Mr N. T. B. W. Beetham. The return of patients in Masterton Hospital for October, 1939, with the figures for 1938 given in parentheses, is as follow: Daily average,- 104.4 (124.32). X-ray examinations, out patients, 39 (24); in patients, 35 (36). Massage treatments, out patients. 69 (92); in patients. 240 (337). Total operations performed. 64 (27). Total remaining in hospital at October 31. 107 (135). The Greytown Hospital figures showed a slight decrease in the daily average of occupied beds, and the number of operations showed a substantial increase. The Pahiatua Hospital daily average was 22.5 (20.2) and the number of operations. 20 (15). A general survey of the Wairarapa hospital district showed a cleaner bill of health this year as compared with the corresponding period last year. The medical superintendent, Dr. T. L. Parr, reported that during the past month 99 patients remained in hospital from September, 137 patients being admitted in October. During October 129 patients were discharged, 107 patients remaining on October 31. The daily average (occupied beds) was 104.4. Owing to Dr. H. M O’Connor applying for special leave, to enable him to gain experience in X-ray work next year, it was recommended that a house surgeon be appointed. The Matron of the Masterton Hospital, Miss M. F. Barnett, reported that Nurses M. Cunningham, Ericson, E. Hamilton, Perry and V. Turner sat for their senioi’ hospital final examination and all had passed. Thirteen first-year nurses sat for their junior state examination. and seven for the practical cooking examination. The Masterton ambulance answered 24 calls during the month and covered a distance of 481 miles.
The Matron of the Greytown Hospital, Miss L. Higginson, stated that during the month 46 patients were admitted and 54 discharged. There were no deaths. Seventy-six remained in hospital, the daily average being 24.45. Thirty-nine operations were performed by the superintendent during the month. In the Buchanan Ward there were two admissions and three deaths. A total of 55 patients remained and the daily average was 56.44. The Greytown, ambulance answered nine calls and covered 236 miles. The hospital and home had been inspected by Miss Moore of the Public Health Department. Miss N. Ockden, Matron of the Pahiatua Hospital, reported that the ambulance had answered J calls and covered a distance of 246 miles. Eleven major and 9 minor operations were performed during the month. The managing-secretary, Mr Norman Lee, submitted a report concerning the board's financial position for the period April 1 to October 31, 1939. For that period maintenance expenditure was in excess of receipts by the sum of £7,538. On capital account there was a credit balance of £3.381. The bank pass book showed an overdraft of £2,934. and cheques outstanding totalled £1.104, making an overdraft of £4.038. The aggregate fees collections for the period under review were greater by the sum of £4.326 than for the same period last year. Tne total amount of fees received to date from the Social Security Department for hospital benefits were £5,176 2s 6d and a further claim for £1.645 10s had been submitted. It would be seen that the a“‘ I re‘ l ate maintenance expenditure on the three hospitals was £1.212 higher than for the proportional estimate for the period. In connection with capital . receipts and payments there was a credit balance of £3.381. The amount of levy and subsidy due for the period was £0,102 and the amount received £5,231. The unexpended balance of loan funds was £3.791. of which £3.i50 was on fixed deposit. Mr J. H. Broom, of the administration stuff, had been called up for military service, and he was being relieved by Mr I. I. McGregor. of Masterton.
