FIGHTING SERVICES

GENEROUS GIFT BY LORD NUFFIELD CHILDREN’S ALLOWANCES. WAR MINISTRY ANNOUNCES INCREASES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) RUGBY, November 14. The Secret<iry of .Stalo for War, Air L. Ilore-Beiisha, revealed in the Bouse of Commons that Lord Nuffield, in addition to other great benefactions already made for the welfare of the lighting forces, has offered a furlher £50,000 for the men of I he three lighting services. By Lord Nuffield’s desire, £15,000 of this sum is to be spent on providing wireless seis for the forces in France, Mr Hore-Belisha also announced in the House of Commons the Government’s decision to increase the allowances for the children of sailors, soldiers. and airmen, as well as the limits of special allowances in eases of hardship. The rates are being raised from 3s to 4s a week for the second child and from 2s to 3s for each subsequent child. On the present figures the changes are expected to add some £2.000,000 to the existing annual expenditure of about £10,000,000 on children's allowances in the three defence services. The concession has been made in response to representations, in recent House of Commons debates, that hardship is being experienced by the families of men in the three services, especially where rents are high.
