GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY AT MIRAMAR BRILLIANT PLAY IN OPENING ROUNDS. YOUNG FLAYERS PROMINENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Brilliant scoring marked the play at the New Zealand golf championship tournament on the Miramar links yesterday, when the first and second rounds of the professional and amateur championships were decided. The weather was ideal with a light southerly prevailing, and players took advantage of the opportunity to improve their figures. Sixty-eights were recorded by A. Murray. the Auckland professional, and R. H. Glading. the Hamilton amateur champion, and several players would probably have broken 70 had the rounds been played out. Many hard tussles took place, one match going to the twentieth and several to the nineteenth.

Many surprises were sprung during the day, among those who fell by the wayside being P. G. F. Smith, last year’s amateur champion, and A. J. Shaw, the Wellington professional who was fancied to take the professional Professional Championship.

First round: A. Murray beat J. Weir, at the nineteenth; J. Galloway beat R. C. Butters, 2 up; George Watt beat A. H. Dyke, 1 up; W. Allbon beat A. E. Guy, 1 up; A. J. Shaw beat C. C. Clements. 5 and 4; T. S. Galloway beat J. Lambic, 2 up; B. Stratmore beat E. S. Douglas, 3 and 1; J. D. Mclntosh beat J. A. Clements, 3 and .2. Second round: Murray boat J. Galloway. at the nineteenth; Allbon beat G. Watt. 1 up; T. S. Galloway beat Shaw, at the nineteenth; B. Stratmore beat Mclntosh, G and 5. title. That many promising young players are coming to the front was evident from the successes scored by colts, who dominated many of the better-known competitors.
