TOWN PLANNING

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR URGED. BUSINESS BEFORE BOARD MEETING. The appointment of a Director of Town Planning was urged by Mr T. Jordan at a meeting of the Town Planning Board held in Wellington recently. Mr Jordan stated that in view of the fact that there was no Director of Town Planning in office, the pi avisions of sections 32 and 33 of the Town Planning Act, 3926, were inoperative and consequently considerable inconvenience was being caused to borough councils in matters relating to the exemption of certain streets from statutory widths. After some discussion, it was resolved: "That the Town Planning Board recommends to the Government that a temporary appointment be made of a Director of Town Planning, to hold office until further legislative provision is made to enable matters relating to lhe exemption of streets from statutory widths to be expeditiously considered.” The board expressed its deep regret at the death of Mr F. C. WidSop, its sympathy with his relatives and its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him to the board and in the interests of town planning generally during the six years for which he was a member of the board. Appreciation was recorded of the services rendered to the board and to town planning generally by Messrs J. W. Beanland, A. H. Bogle, W. M. Page and Dr. C. E. Hercus during their term of office as members of the board. A welcome was extended to Messrs E. V. Blake, F. W. Furkert, F. E. Greenish and W. Marshall, new members of the board. Reports on town planning activities and on a provisional town planning code were presented by Mr J. W. Mawson, town planning officer. A special committee was set up to deal with any questions in connection with the revision of the provisional town planning code. Several matters relating to town planning schemes in various parts of New Zealand were dealt with and committees were appointed to investigate in certain cases. Mr Jordan was appointed chairman of a committee to deal with the Matamata town planning scheme.
