GOLF AT MIRAMAR

ATROCIOUS WEATHER PLAY IN OPEN CONTEST. McINTOSH AND GLADING LEAD THE FIELD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Seldom lias the first round of a New Zealand gold championship been played under worse weather conditions than those on the Miramar course yesterday. A piping northerly wind, with frequent rain showers, prevailed in the morning, but about midday the wind increased to half-gale force and heavy rain set in. The driving rain stung f he faces of players, who were hampered by waterproof clothing. The leading golfers of the .Dominion were put to as severe a test as they have ever been called upon to face.

The players who came through the trying ordeal best were the youthful Hamilton amateur champion, R. H. Glading, and J. D. Mclntosh the unattached Wellington professional, who both covered the course in 74. Glading took 37 each way. his card reading;—Out: 444343645—37; in. 553435345 —37; total. 74.

Mclntosh, who was professional champion of the Dominion in 1926 and 1927, did a brilliant out journey .of 34 and wanted a 4 for a 72 at the home hole. He was on the green in two. but spoilt a brilliant card by actually taking four putts, and ended up with 74. His figures were: —Out: 444343444 —34: in. 553445356—40; total. 74.

The biggest gallery followed A. J. Shaw, the unattached Wellington professional, who has won the open title seven times, and J. B. Hornabrook, the Masterton amateur, who was open champion in 1937 and amateur champion in 1935 and 1936. Even these outstanding players found the conditions too severe for them. Shaw, who had trouble with his short putts, took 41 for the out journey, but did .a sound home run of 37. Hornabrook went out in 38. but took 40 for the second nine, spoiling a good card with , a 6 at the home hole, where his second found a bunker, and he missed a short putt. A birdie 3 at the eighth (330 yards) helped Hornabrook along. The second round will be played today. The competition thus far is very open.
