LOST SUBMARINE
OXLEY CASUALTY LIST. ISSUED BY ADMIRALTY. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. November 8. Following Mr Churchill's announcement of the loss of the submarine Oxley a few weeks ago by an explosion, the Admiralty published a casualty list containing the names of four officers and 49 ratings. No Dominion men were included.
The Oxley was one of the three submarines known as the Oberon class, the others being the name ship and the Otway. The Oxley and Otway, which were built by Vickers Armstrong. Ltd , were completed in 1927.
The Oxley measured 275 feet in length and 27.7 feet in breadth. Her surface displacement was 1350 tons and her submerged displacement 1870 tons. She was propelled by Diesel engines which gave her a surface speed of 15! knots, and her electric motors a submerged speed of 9 knots. She was fitted with eight torpedo-tubes and also carried one 4-inch gun. Her complement was 53 officers and men.
The Oxley was built for the Royal Australian Navy and presented to the Royal Navy by the Australian Navy rive years later
