OUT OF FAVOUR

SOVIET EMBASSY PARTY IN WASHINGTON. DIGNATARIES STAY AWAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright WASHINGTON, November 8. United States dignitaries, with the exception of two Congressmen, were pointedly absent from the Soviet Embassy’s annual party to celebrate the 1917 revolution, further emphasising the. resentment over M. Molotov’s speech and the City of Flint incident. Those who had “previous engagements” included Senators, Congressmen, Chief Justice Hughes, and Mr John L. Lewis, the Labour leader. In response to a cordial message last year, President Roosevelt failed to send felicitations. In response to a thousand gold-em-bossed invitations mailed in former years, more than a thousand people have attended, but the guests this year totalled fewer than 800. The British Ambassador, Lord Lothian, also pleaded a previous engagement. The German Charge d'Afl'aires was conspicuously present. The wives of a few Senators, including Mrs Dorah, attended, despite the refusal of their husbands to be present.
