DEEDS OF RIVETTE

A GREAT DOUBLE WINNER. Another Melbourne Cup is history, but the deeds of Rivette, who on Tuesday had her name enrolled on the scroll of fame, are not likely to be forgotten by writers in . the future when delving into the records of the past. Owned and trained by a “battler.” Harry Bamber. whose “battling" days methinks are over, Rivette is the first mare to win the coveted two cups double—the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups—joining Poseidon and The Trump, the only other horses to accomplish the feat in the long history of the races, writes “The Escort.”

At three years Rivette won a maiden race and two years ago was running in trial and novice races without any great success. Her best form that season was when carrying 7.0 and in receipt of 211 b from Maluno she defeated him in the Compensation Handicap. of one and a-quarter miles at Moonee Valley. It was not until last Winterjhat she struck the form which culminated in her winning the Caulfield Cup, and had anyone suggested six months ago that she was a possibility for both events they would have been laughed at, for at that time she was quoted at 100 to 1 on the charts. She started favourite in the Caulfield Cup and on Tuesday, if not the actual favourite, was in the second line.

Her owner, prior to the Caulfield Cup, was not perturbed as to whether she had the ability to win or not but rather “if it were too rich a prize for me." Since her win in the Caulfield Cup Rivette has been referred to as “the little mare," a description that is not entirely correct, She stands 15.3 hands high, as against the 15.1 of Geebung, who also contested the Caulfield Cup. The length of her head is 28 inches, while she derives her driving power from the 39i inches from hip to hock. From hock to fetlock she measures 171 inches and has eight inches below the knee. Rivette is well girthed and has perfect balance, measuring from the top lip to the top of the wither exactly the same as from the top of the wither to the last joint of the tail.
