SOME NEW FILMS

HOLLYWOOD'S LATEST. 1 There is some talk of Orson Welles, a versatile young man who some time ago created a near-panic with his realistic radio production of “Men from Mars.” producing Joseph Conrad’s Belgian Congo yarn, “Hearts of Darkness." If he does he will have the collaboration of his famous Mercury Theatre staff of prodigies, and there is every chance it will be revolutionary in technique. Bette Davis is to be represented by two films in the next few months, “The Old Maid,” just released here, and “The Lady and the Knight,” in the cutting process. Bette does not hit her stride in “The Old Maid” until- near the end, when she has a chance to do some fine character work, some of the best she has ever done, but Miriam Hopkins, who shares top billing with her, turns in one of her greatest efforts. Frank Capra will have an Academy Award contender in “Mr Smith Goes

to Washington,” which stars Jimmy Stewart and a host of old-timers. Garbo returns after a long absence in a frothy comedy titled "Ninotchka,” 1 but which likely will be changed for box-office reasons. Garbo as a comedienne and doing a dance when she becomes a little tipsy will bo worth the price of admission. Lewis Milestone is attempting to bring John Steinbeck’s novel, "Of Mice and Men," to the screen, but probably what interest the book had will be slashed by censors before it reaches the screen. Steinbeck is to be represented by another, “Grapes of Wrath,” his controversial study of migratory workers in California’s fruit empire. Whether this will be brought to the screen or how much of it is made innocuous for screen consumption is causing as much controversy as the book itself.
