PIRINOA

MILD EPIDEMIC SCHOOL ATTENDANCE SUFFERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) An epidemic of a mild nature has affected several residents of this district. The attendance at the local school was affected by the ailment. Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes Day was celebrated in its reality on Saturday evening, when residents of the district assembled in large numbers at Tauanui. thanks io the courtesy of the manager, Mr J. McDonald. Practically every child in Pirinoa were present and a most enjoyable time was spent. The huge bonfire with an effigy of a prominent European leader, was lit, the glare from it illuminating the countryside and with rockets and crackers of all colours made the scene quite a beautiful one. Community singing in the open air by the children helped in spasms by their elders was much enjoyed. Supper was served in the homestead and much appreciated by all. Mr F. Lovegrove, on behalf of the assembly thanked Miss Scrimegour for her kind thought in arranging the function, which he stated was the first occasion that Guy Fawkes Day had been celebrated in the district in such a manner. The speaker also referred to the courtesy of Mr McDonald. The remarks of Mr Lovegrove were received with cheers. The gathering dispersed at a late hour.

Personal Items. Miss N. McDougall is in Wellington, where her brother, Mr R. McDougall, is in a private hospital. Mr McDougall’s health is showing a decided improvement. Mrs T. Burling, who has been in indifferent health has entered hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs N. Thompson have taken up their residence in this district. Mr R. Hume, who was staying here for the past fortnight, has returned te Masterton. Miss Goulsborough commenced hei duties at the local school last week. Mrs W. Hume. Wellington, was a visitor here for the christening of her grandson. Mesdames Swan and Beard were the guests of Mr and Mrs Trevor Hume over the weekend. Also staying will: them are Mr and Mrs G. Swan. Mr and Mrs J. Barr. Masterton. were the guests of their daughter. Mrs Marshall. Kaiwaru, over the weekend. Shearing Operations. Shearing is in full operation in this district. Transport lorries are operating every day carting wool to the railway. Weather Conditions. The weather is now beautifully fine but still the growth of grass has no! materially improved although it is hoped that it will improve more so within the next week or so. However, if weather such as we had here recently, is again experienced the dairying output will no doubt, suffer. The Lake Outlet. The outlet, of the lake was closed recently but opened itself a few days alter. However, it is reported that it is again closed.
