CARTERTON

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School there were present Messrs H. J. McKenzie (chairman), C. K. Goodin. P. L. Beere,'B. E. Clarke, J. Stevens, W. S. King, G. Rabbits, W. E. Knowles and J. Finn as well as the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. The Education Board wrote stating that it had recommended to the Department that the headmaster should be allowed a house allowance, and that the present school residence should be let for what could be obtained for it. The house is in such a condition that the headmaster at present prefers to rent a dwelling at his own expense. The chairman stated that the Employment Department had agreed to an extension of the scheme whereby a man is employed in improvements at the school. At the previous meeting the committee was advised that all such subsidised labour would automatically be dispensed with unless special application was received for continuation.

Some discussion took place on the carrying of children from the Carring-ton-Belvedere district, for which contract tenders are at present being received. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Department that when tenders are being considered no consideration be given to tenderers contemplating two trips. It was also pointed out that the number of child■ren to be carried as contained in the advertisements was incorrect, the approximate number to be carried being in the vicinity of thirty. The matter of erecting a small shelter for the daily supply of milk was left to the headmaster, the chairman •and Mr W. King to attend to. A letter was received from the Education Board stating that the matter of re-laying asphalt at the south school was receiving attention, and that an officer of the Board would visit the school shortly in connection with the matter. The headmaster reported a roll of 392, as against 378 at the commencement of the term. The school ball will be held on Friday, December 1. A pupil at the old school received a badly crushed finger through having it jammed in a door, and the absence of a telephone caused considerable delay in having the injury attended to. The headmaster considered that the necessity'for a telephone’was so urgent that mere expense should not stand in the way. The door responsible for the accident had caused a previous mishap of the same nature, and Mr Martin reported that it was particularly dangerous, no effort being successful in preventing it from "banging.” The headmaster stated that he had reported the matter to the Department, and the committee decided to support the headmaster in his action. It was decided to have a telephone installed at the commencement of the first term next year. It was decided to sell the hay on the school grounds to the highest bidders, and place the proceeds to the credit of the sports acdount.
