TROTTING TRAGEDY
McDERMOTT FATALLY INJURED. FALL FROM SULKY DURING RUNNING OF CUP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. November 7. Falling from his sulky while driving Colonel Grattan in the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington this afternoon, E. C. McDermott, well-known trainer and driver, died shortly afterward. It is thought that McDermott had a seizure before falling. Colonel Grattan was in the lead after a mile and a half had been covered, and. when his driver fell, went on to cross the line first. McDermott was rushed to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but nothing could be done for him. In his early fifties, McDermott had been interested in trotting since his youth, and had bred and raced many horses. Among the most successful were Capricious and Colonel Grattan. He came from the Leeston district and was a cattle dealer as well as a trotting trainer. He was a popular figure in the trotting world. McDermott is survived by a wife and one son.
