DEATH OF AIRMAN
MISHAP WHEN LANDING SEAPLANE. AFTER ANTI-SUBMARINE PATROL. (By Telegraph—Brews Association.! AUCKLAND, November 7. Some further details of the flyingboat accident in which Pilot Officer Gordon William Sutton lost his life on September 18 have been received from the Air Ministry by his father, Mr A. J. Sutton, Ararimu. The letter from lhe Air Ministry, dated September 27, stated that at 11.30 a.m. on September 17 Pilot-Offi-cer Sutton left Pembroke Dock, Wales, as pilot of a flying-boat engaged on anti-submarine patrol. The accident occurred in the early morning of September 18, as the aircraft was landing on completion of the flight. The wreckage sank in deep water, and the body of one member of the crew only was recovered. There was unfortunately no evidence to show precise details and the cause of the accident. The letter contains an expression of the department’s sincere sympathy with Mr Sutton.
A cable dispatched by the Air Ministry on October 7 informed Mr Sutton that the body of his son had been recovered from the sea and that the commanding officer of Pilot Officer Sutton’s unit had arranged for the funeral to take place with full service honours at Pembroke Dock on Monday, October 9.
