MASTERTON BRANCH. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the W.C.T.U. was presided over by Miss Tankersley. After devotions led by Mrs Jansen, the president moved a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs J. Davie la vice-president), members standing in silence. Several apologies for absence were received.
Mrs Jansen presented the Temperance Fact as follows: “Food values compared: Bread has 22 per cent of heat producing food; oatmeal has 69 per cent; potatoes 22 per cent and beer has 1 per cent. In lib bread there are 566 grains of muscle-building food; in 1 pint of milk 358; and in a barrel of whisky—none.” It was resolved to send the proceeds of the Frances Willard Centenary evening to the headquarters of the Centennial Fund in Wellington. After the tea interval the annual reports were submitted and commented on, the financial statement showing a credit balance of £6 19s 4d. Steady progress has been made through the year, youth work given a stimulus through the organiser’s visit, and prominence given to Miss Francos Willard’s Centenary, she being the founder of world W.C.T.U.
Il was stated that worthy of special mention was the fact that Parliamentary legislation had been passed regarding drinking at dance halls—an act that the W.C.T.U. had worked and prayed for for some time.
All the officers were re-elected. Expressions of appreciation were made to Mr and Mrs Sims for their leadership and co-operation in the young people’s branches. -The meeting terminated with . the pronouncing of the Benediction by Mrs H. Speight.
